«Bridesmaids» y «The Hunger Games» peleaban por obtener el mayor número de trofeos. La comedia y la saga de supervivencia fueron las principales nominadas en la 21ra entrega con ocho cada una, incluyendo Película del Año. Los otros competidores para el gran premio de la noche eran «Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2» y «The Help».
El anfitrión de la ceremonia en vivo y favorita de los fans es el actor y comediante Russell Brand, conocido por su humor vulgar.
Inició el espectáculo burlándose del atributo frontal de Michael Fassbender por su desnudo en «Shame» y la breve vida de casada de Kim Kardashian, aunque reconoció que lo hacía con hipocresía. Brand pidió el año pasado el divorcio a la superestrella de música pop Katy Perry después de 14 meses de matrimonio. Perry estuvo en los MTV Video Music Awards de 2009, que también fueron conducidos por Brand.
«Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2» se llevó los premios al Mejor Elenco y Mejor Héroe. «The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn— Part 1» se llevó los premios a la Película del Año y al Mejor Beso.
Otros ganadores del domingo en la noche fueron Shailene Woodley por ser la Actuación Revelación en «The Descendants».
