No hubo importantes sorpresas entre las nominaciones para los la 27a edición de los «Independent Spirit Awards», los premios del cine independiente estadounidenses. Aunque en realidad si hubo algunas nominaciones que no se esperaban y otras películas que quedaron fuera.
«The Artist», la película del francés Michel Hazanavicius que rinde homenaje al cine mudo, fue elegida como la mejor del año por los críticos de Nueva York y parte además como favorita de los premios con cinco nominaciones.
Las nominaciones fueron las esperadas: «Beginners,» «Drive,» «The Descendants,» «Martha Marcy May Marlene» y «Take Shelter» son las favoritas y a la vez tuvieron la mayoría de las nominaciones. Sin embargo, a excepción de la categoría de «Mejor Película Internacional», todas las propuestas apuestan a producciones norteamericanas.
Los Independent Spirit Awards se han erigido como la alternativa a los Oscar para las películas cuyo presupuesto no supera los 20 millones de dólares. Se entregan tradicionalmente un día antes de los premios de la Academia de Cine estadounidense en una carpa instalada en las playas de Santa Mónica.
